To late for rye?
We have 14 days of 20 degree overnights and mid 40s even some 50s for daytime high.
Thinking of seeding down a couple hundred more acres of winter rye. Guess not to worried if it vernalizes just dont want to kill the seed. Is that possible with winter rye?
Worst case is it dont vernalize and i have some first crop grass before row crops or just burn it down after planting.
I put my last few acres of it in Saturday. I put in an inch and a half down with 6 inches of snow and 20-40 degree temps for the week I’ll just pray it works.
I see a lot of guys in Minnesota are still planting rye. I would like to think that her at some point next spring it would frost seed?
Jon, how much rye did you get broadcast before the snow? Have you gone and brushed away any snow to see if anything has happened, or if any of it looks like it germinated? After the storm, our ground actually has thawed under the snow. Not sure if it is warm enough for the rye to do anything, but a guy can hope! I had rye planted at 1" deep, and a week before the snow we dug some up and it had small roots just starting. I should go try and do some digging this week before we get the arctic blast and see if the roots have grown more or if they have gone dormant
I had 30 Acres that was a grass crop going into snow. I had 80 acres of green fuzz and 110 acres just seeded.
I I have thought about going to see if I could find any germination. But I will wait until after January 1st to get out of the curse of 2019. LOL
